A DREAM

Project type

Video Art

This project walks the boundary between what is video art and what is a music since the controversy is video art tends to be a music video. My video art walks that boundary almost mocking a music video with the details of everything wrong with it from the weird pacing, backwards vocals, wrong subtitles and off lip syncing. It also critiques the music industry highlighting the artistic expression companies tend to take away almost separating the performer from their authentic selves. Essentially they’re taking our voice away and even in this video conversely my voice singing is being taken away from the performer instead as she tries to break free

This project deliberately blurs the line between video art and the music video, engaging with the ongoing debate about whether video art can exist independently of the conventions of commercial music production. My work subverts the traditional music video format, incorporating deliberate disruptions such as irregular pacing, reversed vocals, incorrect subtitles, and misaligned lip-syncing. These disruptions serve not only as a critique of the form itself but also as a commentary on the music industry’s role in stripping artists of their creative autonomy. By highlighting the ways in which corporations commodify and distort artistic expression—often separating performers from their authentic selves—the video mirrors this loss of agency.

At the centre of the video is a performer embodying the figure of a jester—historically a symbol of entertainment bound by servitude. This representation underscores the exploitative nature of the music industry, where artists are often reduced to mere performers, forced to sacrifice their individuality for commercial success.
