God Given Rights

Project type

Video Art/ Double Projection Installation

Date

September 2025

Location

Victoria, Canada

In God Given Rights, I explore how the separation between church and state in America is breaking down. Religion has started to influence politics in ways that threaten personal freedom and choice.

I perform as Uncle Sam; a symbol of control, while two marionette dolls recite The Ten Commandments and The First Amendment. Behind them, a biblically accurate angel pulls the strings, singing “Trust and Obey.” Together they show the conflict between moral authority and individual liberty, and how the line between them keeps blurring.

Inspired by George Orwell’s 1984 and the idea of the Panopticon, this work reflects how faith and government can merge into one watchful force, using belief as a form of power and surveillance.
